Purchase Our Wines and Products

Welcome to our family of wines. Most of our wines indicate the vineyard where the grapes originated (vineyard-designated wines must contain at least 95% of grapes from that vineyard) and each has a story to tell beyond the flavor of its fruit.

We have half bottles available for most of our wines. The half bottles (375 ml) are priced at 60% of the 750ml bottle price to compensate for extra costs in making them. We did not list them on this site because of the limited number we produce and the small demand. If you want half bottles, call and talk to the winemaker, Paul Kreider or e-mail us.

All prices are FOB San Anselmo, CA. We ship via UPS. The purchaser will pay only the actual shipping costs, computed at check out. Shipping Information or call (415) 457-5157 during our business hours (1-7:00PM west coast)

100% satifaction guarantee. If you not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, return the wine in question with an explanation and we will refund 100% of the purchase price less shipping charges.

 INTIMATE WINE APPRECIATION CLASSES

For a mere $125 you can spend 8 hours with winemakers Durphy and Kreider (who together have 62 years of winemaking experience and can discuss, at an impressive level of intelligence, just about any wine subject you might want. This is NOT however an up in the clouds, wine snob exercise, quite the contrary, it is very down to earth and hands-on. My style of teaching is more to let you discover rather than have me tell you, a method that lends itself particularly well to the subject of wine. The classes are on two April Sunday afternoons (the first is April 15th, second will be decided by the class)  from 1:00PM until 5:00PM. We will start off slow, and have plenty of opportunity to taste and eat. If that appeals to you, please sign up now for classes to be announced. .

WINE CLASS ADMISSION

Your card charge will not be processed until the class starts. Why wait? Do it now, make a commitment.

Oak tannins are a pleasant sensation in this edition of our Oller Merlot, making a well balanced but not soft merlot that marries well with a wide range of food flavors. 2004 Carneros Cabernet Sauvignon RESERVE

UNFILTERED

Deeper and darker than the 2003, this edition has delightful fruit and body. It was made from cabernet grapes grown in the cool Carneros region, usually planted in cool weather grapes like pinot noir and chardonnay. The fact is that these grapes take longer to ripen there, giving them more "hang time" to develop more flavor and fruit. Also, the vines were planted in 1950, so I consider them old, developing more intense taste. With decanting for air, this wine is enjoyable now; I suspect it will become great over the next 7 years. 100 cases produced. Alc. 13.8% by vol.

One (wo)man's opinion: "This has become my favorite wine in your line up. The fruit does it for me" Kerry Kirkham, San Rafael, CA

One man's opinion: "Tonight we are drinking your 2003 Carneros Cab...and this is everything I want in a wine. The Zin I bought is great, but I am loving this Cab." Phil Terry, Larkspur, CA

Vin de NOIX

Literally, French for "Wine of Nuts", this digestif is known as Nochino in Italy. My friend Rob Brown discovered a recipe for make your own at home and together we kicked it up several notches. Rob has been instrumental in producing this wine under my direction, from sourcing the organic walnuts in the San Anselmo neighborhood to helping blend the various components to throwing the release party we have right before Thanksgiving. You want to have this before bedtime, after dinner when the kids are in bed. In front of the fire, if possible.  Very limited supply, we will make more this year (2008).  Alc. 19.7% by vol.

2006 Sonoma County Fermez la Port

Oh man, we had trouble keeping the 2005 on the shelves and in my not so humble opinion, the 2006 is even better! It was meant to be drunk after dinner when the kids are in bed, in front of a fire, with someone nibbling at your ear. But I think dark chocolataholics are cheating and having it more often. Alc. 18.0% by vol.

Rich and deep zinfandel port style dessert wine made from Sonoma County zinfandel. With dark chocolate: orgasmic! 23 cases produced.

Stories of the Wines

OLLER MERLOT

Bob Oller is a retired San Francisco fireman. Nick Greben, who lives next door to him in Sonoma is a retired Oakland fireman. Firemen stick together, so when Bob wanted to plant a vineyard on his property, it made only sense that he would turn to Nick for assistance. After all, Nick already had experience with grapes on his own property. As a matter of fact, Nick Greben's Merlot is no stranger to the Ross Valley Winery; we have made several vintages of excellent wine from it. The grapes are very small, giving us high proportion of skin to grape juice, which makes wines of highly extracted color and tannin, not your average supermarket variety of Merlot. Several years ago I helped Nick set up his own bonded winery and in doing so lost access to the Merlot grapes, as Nick would be fermenting them. However, Nick was sure to plant his neighbor Bob Oller's vineyard with bud wood from his own vineyard, assuring the same quality in both vineyards. I now buy Bob Oller's grapes and Nick makes his own wine from his own grapes. And, since winemakers stick together too, Nick Greben's wines are also available by the bottle in the retail part of our winery.

GREBENNIKOFF CHARDONNAY

Nick Greben (for short) is a long time friend and has been a huge help in our winemaking endeavor, always ready to lend a hand or a piece of equipment. His entire vineyard was formerly planted with chardonnay and gewurtztraminer, which he budded over to merlot when the market for those white grapes dropped like a stone. He did, however, leave a couple of rows of chardonnay, and he sells those to us and we make chardonnay out of them. They have a wonderful pear aroma as they ferment, and we are very happy to produce this wine as a vineyard designated chardonnay as we think it is distinctive and should not be blended into a mixed batch as it was formerly.

RED HILL RED

Paul Nichols, a friend and winemaker, found himself in a predicament one day. He owned several thousand bottles of wine that he could not sell because he lacked the license to do so, although he had made the wine in an entirely legal way at a bonded winery in Sonoma. I like to help friends out, so I offered to see what his wine was all about. This original (first edition) blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 20% Zinfandel and 20% Gamay was very good, and I made an arrangement to purchase it in bond, allowing us to sell the wine under our own second label. As it should happen, that same series of talks was more fruitful than I imagined at the time. Paul and I contemplated the idea of moving my winery from my garage into a commercial retail space, an event that played itself out in the purchase and renovation of 343 San Anselmo Ave, where we happily reside today. Paul continues to make wine for us, and smiles at the fortunate twist that unfolded from his earlier predicament.

FERMEZ LA PORT

Please understand  that true port can only come from Portugal and is in a class of its own, in the same way Champagne only comes from the Champagne region of France and all other wine with bubbles in it is called sparkling wine. I started making "port" from over-ripe cool weather grown grapes (mostly in the Russian River Valley) back in 1991. I used the traditional methods of producing this sweet dessert wine. More importantly, I got labels approved using the name "Fermez la port" which means "close the door" in French, if, as the french are quick to point out, you add an "e" to port. I have had many interactions with French speaking patrons who first tell me that I have left the "e" off, and when I explain it is Port as in port wine, they say, then it should be Fermez LE port, after which I tell them to shut up and taste some, it is a play on words, and finally they Fermez their Bouches long enought to enjoy the taste sensation of this lively after dinner drink. The labels are important because your government in an effort to protect you from errant winemakers, has decreed that the work "Port" can no longer be used on NEW wine labels, in essence, grandfathering me in with my two Fermez la Port labels, one from Sonoma, one from Mendocino County. So long as I don't need to change that label, it's mine.

CLOSE THE WHITE DOOR

If you have read the paragraph above you will understand why we had to use the translation of Fermez la Port when the label approval authorities rejected our label application for "Fermez la Port Blanche" for our white port style chardonnay dessert wine.
